Big news. I finally found my mom jeans. I know I’ve complained about my search for jeans before, but I’ll explain.
I’ve always loved denim. As a teenager, I was not particularly fashionable – (OK – I was nerdy), but I was comfortable with myself when I found bluejeans. As a young adult, I moved quickly in to the business world and lived in conservative suits – but jeans in the evening. As a late – stay at home mom in the mid 90s to 2010s – I was always chasing my kids and spending time in cold arenas and sports fields – staying warm in denim. Some time in the 90s though, my mom jeans became a bad thing.
Mom jeans are high waisted jeans – usually just above the navel. Sometime in the 90s I think someone somewhere decided they were not flattering. The distance between the waist and the behind – makes the behind seem disproportionately longer and flatter.
Sometimes they include pleats (shame), elastic waistbands, maybe even straight legs or baggy legs, but I’m not going that far. Wikipedia tells me they were fashionable with trendy young women until the 90s (SO I WAS FASHIONABLE – Thank you Wikipedia), when lower rise jeans became more fashionable. I remember Stacy and Clinton from What Not to Wear – pointing out how the shorter waist and pocket positioning of the new lower rise jeans were more flattering to the behind. MAYBE SO, but when you have 4 babies in 5 years between the ages of 35 and 40 – the low rise jeans just don’t hold it all together.
The long waist of mom jeans helped to pull in or just obscure the post-baby belly, just a bit. The low rise jeans just create muffin top. That’s why the late 90s to 2010 time period was the MUFFIN TOP era.
Then we brought back high waisted jeans, but somehow real denim disappeared. Denim with that forgiving stretch is not forgiving to me – It just lets everything bulge, or won’t stay up.
So I’ve been on a bit of a quest. I’ve previously told you about my online shopping failure https://everydaylillie.com/2019/04/26/online-fashion-fail/
I had ordered TALL INSIDER DARK WASHED JEANS from Reitmans.com. The style was nice enough – but they were too stretchy and had no belt loops and no zipper! – so crawling around in the garden would result in an unpleasant view for the neighbours. These were 93%Cotton, 6% Elasterell and 1% elastine Lycra.
I ordered another pair from the same company – with belt loops and zipper, so at least they could be belted – but still too stretchy for me
I came across Amanda Classic High Waisted Jeans from Gloria Vanderbilt – Heritage Fit read the label on one coloured varietey – and I was happy with the fabric of the beige toned pants – but they were not available in tall. The fabric on these was 98% Cotton, 2% Elastane – Much Better, but too short and the colour wrong.
I found the same label on a denim version but the fabric was stretchier. SIGH! The fabric is 73% Cotton, 25% Polyester, 2% Elastane – a disappointment.
Finally, Long Tall Sally has a large assortment of jeans available and I finally ordered 2 pairs in my slightly tall length and they arrived today. The fabric is 98% Cotton! They were labelled as Authentic Denim High Rise Straight – “Fitted at the hips, loose through the thigh to knee and straight from the knee to the hem” My size 10, 34 length was as I expected, and there was not a stretch to be seen. The only thing I would caution is that they have a button front, but that’s OK – it’s well constructed!
So I’m happy today, and I may even take the tags off of these ones. I’m choosing not to look in the rear view to see if my behind does look longer and flatter, because my husband just flattered me, and that’s all I need to know for now.
