Pandemic Online Stocking Stuffing

What a difference a year makes. Last year we did a little in-store shopping and some online shopping and leisurely got ready for our children and my mother to arrive for Christmas. This year we are nine months into a worsening pandemic and are not even sure whether our two out-of-town children will travel home for Christmas. I know that this is just the way of the world right now while we shut down to get past this second wave but golly gee……

My husband and I have committed to each other to shop only online for gifts this year, and that’s a little tricky, but we are learning as we go. I would love to shop at local stores to get inspired, but honestly our google searches keep running back to those big online vendors – Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair and so on…….

While I’m writing this my first order placed on Amazon last night just arrived.

I always start my Christmas shopping with identifying the main things that people need or want, establishing my budget for each (It has to be or appear equal for each child – honest) – and a fair amount of time is spent on this – followed by finding the deals. Today I’m starting with the stockings and the board game!

Now we all know that if there are Christmas Stockings to be filled, that Santa fills them. That’s just obvious of course. But sometimes an old Mom like me tops up the stockings with things that are needed or silly things and of course treats.

Now it’s difficult during this pandemic to to find those things that I think of as stocking stuffers. (Of course Santa fills the stockings, but mine are extra big so I just top them up with a few things). These to me are small necessities, silly gadgets and treats in the one dollar price range. My google for stocking stuffers leads me to $25 items, which doesn’t meet my thrifty requirements.

Now in pre-pandemic times, I might have visited the Dollar Store, and then my local discount pharmacy chain and finally Walmart’s bargain aisles to top up the stockings, – but alas, I will not be risking that this year.

So I visited and clicked on Gifts, then Stocking Stuffers, followed by Beauty and Self Care, and aha I sorted by Price – Low to High – then I visited the other departments to gather some treats silly toothbrush holders and so on. I also jumped to’s Rexall pharmacy site and grabbed a few more things. I also picked up some exciting gifts like Vitamin D and mouthwash, just in case they actually work against Covid 19, but who really knows?

The shipping deadlines for to arrive by Christmas are helpfully posted and some areas of Canada are just about here – so I put together a nice order of things and added in my baking supplies for Christmas Cookies. Then I headed (virtually of course) over to to order the dreaded Christmas socks. Now nobody really likes to get socks for Christmas, but why doesn’t anyone but me ever buy them? It’s time to get rid of those mismatched and hole-y socks. Santa can take care of the rest of the stocking stuffing.

At Christmas, I try to find a new board game for everyone to enjoy together during the holidays. Over the last few years the kids have enjoyed watching their parents being embarrassed by inappropriate games like Exploding Kittens, Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme? It looks like a family version of Cards Against Humanity is available now, so hopefully it’s more appropriate, and they also sell Expansion Packs for all of these games, but I think it’s time for something new.

This year Chess is popular because of the Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit, but I’m heading back to a game I can win – one with Baby Boomer Trivia – so I’m thinking “Boom Again” and if I can dominate the Christmas evening Trivia game then things are looking up just a little despite the pandemic.

There are affiliate links for sites from which I may earn a small commission if you click on them and make a purchase. There is no extra cost to you. If you have any ideas of great places to buy Christmas gifts online please let me know! And happy shopping.
