Ukrainian Pysanka

It’s impossible to think and talk about Easter Eggs without speaking of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Pysanka is a traditional craft involving painting intricate designs on eggs with a wax relief method. This artwork is also practiced in other eastern European countries, but this year we think in particular of Ukraine. I hope and pray for the end of this war on Ukraine, and I pray for the safety of the Ukrainian people.

Family Easter Egg Hunts

This is a quiet Easter weekend for us. In previous years we had Easter Egg hunts in and outside of our house. On one occasion our two middle children got tangled up with each other on our front steps in the egg hunting frenzy. Our daughter fell down the stairs, – everyone said sorry, all heck broke loose – and then she won the hunt, as usual.

In our last egg hunt, two years ago, the four now adult kids in their pajamas, searched for chocolate eggs in our living room and along the front porch. No one was hurt this time. Our vegan daughter won the event with the most eggs as usual, and then proceeded to divide up the proceeds among her brothers. She always wins, but never eats the chocolate…….

This year we will not be doing the hunt, but I was happy to see that our local small town businesses had created an Easter Egg hunt for the neighbourhood children.

Today I will re-post some silly quotes about eggs, and some photos of my Easter Egg collection, and even more exciting and new this year – some of the World’s Biggest Eggs and their locations! Every road trip should include a Giant Egg. I’m a giant fan of oversized roadside attractions.

Egg Trivia

Eggs throughout history have always been a symbol of fertility and sometimes royalty. Engraved and decorated Ostrich eggs dating back 60,000 years were found in South Africa. Decorated eggs have also been found in excavations of ancient civilizations in Crete, Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Wikipedia tells me that in Christianity eggs represent the empty tomb of Jesus, from which Jesus was resurrected. Eggs were often decorated and given as gifts at Easter, and then the tradition of giving chocolate eggs became popular. Chocolate is certainly popular in my household! I’m no historian or Easter expert though, so here are my egg quotes and collection of eggs……

The World’s Largest Eggs

The Largest Pysanka in the world is the Pysanka Museum in Kolomyia, in western Ukraine. The central part of the museum is in the shape of a pysanka, and is 14m in height and 10 m in diameter.

Vegreville Alberta Pysanka

The second largest Pysanka in the world is in Vegreville Alberta Canada. The egg can be found along Alberta’s Yellowhead Highway, in central Alberta, east of Edmonton. The egg measures 25.7 feet long, 18 feet wide, and stands 31 feet high.

Apparently – the egg moves in the wind, similar to a weather vane!

Winlock Washington Egg

The city of Winlock, Washington USA – south of Tacoma – claims to have the world’s biggest egg, and celebrates Egg Days with an Egg Days Parade and a Miss Egg Day Pageant. At 12 feet long, it’s pretty darn big – but it’s not bigger than those Pysankas.

Mentone Indiana Egg

The Mentone Indiana Egg is heavier than the Winlock Egg at 3000 pounds (the Winlock egg weighs in at 1200 pounds), but is only 10 feet in height. It is made from concrete, while the Winlock egg is made from fibreglass.

Salvador Dali Egg

The Salvador Dali Theater and Museum in Figueres Spain is lined with large eggs – not the biggest, but lots of them.

At Salvador Dali’s home in Catalan, there is another of his egg sculptures, a giant egg – on the roof. I haven’t been able to track down the dimensions.

Vilnius Lithuania Easter Egg

In Vilnius, Lithuania, an Easter Egg sculpture sits in a square. This egg was meant to be a temporary fixture, to be replaced by a bigger sculpture of an Angel. When the newer sculpture was installed, the Egg found a new permanent location, due to its popularity.

Pomerode Brazil Easter Egg

Pomerode Brazil has now claimed the world’s largest Easter Egg. The Pomerode egg is 15.02 m (49 ft 3 in) tall and 8.72 m (28 ft 7 in) in diameter. This egg was created for a festival in 2019.

Salou Spain – World’s Largest Easter Egg!!

But – JUST IN……. The largest decorated Easter egg is 15.98 m ( ft in) tall and 10.65 m (28 ft 7 in) in diameter, in Salou, Tarragona, Spain on 10 March 2022.

Now, I haven’t personally visited any of these eggs, so I haven’t gotten my measuring tape out to verify any of these measurements, but it seems like Salou Spain is the current winner! I do have a real Easter Bunny living in my backyard though.

And speaking of eggs, I love my poached eggs, freshly made by my husband two to three mornings a week.
