Happy New Year 2023

When I was just a little younger I used to make New Year resolutions. I think these are generally good idea, because they help us to look forward and plan ahead. Generally there would be a resolution about exercising and eating healthier, career and projects and family goals. But you know – after a few decades of making similar resolutions – I realize that just trying to do my best with all of that everyday, thinking positively, being kind – and most importantly – having a bit of fun – is pretty darned good.

I enjoyed comedian Rick Mercer’s New Year’s Eve message yesterday on the CBC Countdown to 2023 broadcast. Here is the video (of the whole show unfortunately – but the relevant part is just the first few minutes after the ads:

The part that I enjoyed is Mercer’s initial “rant” style walk and introduction to the program – the quote is below:

This year’s resolution and I hope you will join me. I refuse to submit to the doom. We are living in a time where every columnist, every commentator, no matter what they’re talking about, they have two speeds. It’s the end of the world, or its the end of the world. Well I’m not buying into it. I’m going the other way. I’m going to embrace the positive. Now I’m not saying we put our head in the sand. There’s alot going on. We live in the land of a $10 head of lettuce. Clearly our airline industry is run by sado masochists. I’m just saying I’m going to look for the good news and believe me it is there. It is not on page one, but it is there. I resolve to be a glass half full Canadian, and glass half full or full of something delicious with which I will toast each and every Canadian and wish us all a positive and productive year.

Rick Mercer

Now my glass is always half full, and it still is. So cheers to Rick Mercer and cheers to you. Happy 2023.

    1. Happy New Year to you as well Maggie! I don’t usually tune in to New Year’s Eve broadcasts – but I tuned in just to see Rick Mercer.

    1. I can’t say that I watched the whole broadcast, I was just happy to tune in and see Rick Mercer again, as like you I miss the rants. I enjoyed his positive message. Happy 2023 Bernie!
